Malta Master Class Information

Come with me on a hands-on practical step by step photographic master class like no other. We will not only learn the technical aspects of photography and post-production but we will also explore the meaning of an image and how to make your photos work for you. We will learn how to be reactive to the world around us with speed to ensure we can capture the moment. Our canvas will be the spectacular Maltese Islands.

The Maltese Islands are an archipelago in the Southern Mediterranean Sea, they are made up of three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino; these will be our backdrop. Together we will be exploring Malta and Gozo from the Ggantija temples on Gozo, which date to 5000 BC and gradually move through the ages via landscapes and architecture. You will learn in the field with a very hands on method, you will be surprised how fast you learn and how fast your skills will improve.

The group will start with the basics to make sure we are all on the same page with terminology and the language of photography. This will take us about 4 hours. We will be going through this part of the master class in the UNESCO world heritage site, the Cittadella. Once we are all up to speed and working in the same way we will then be ready to move into advanced shooting.

Understanding how to work with light is extremely important for photographers, we will work through techniques to be able to shoot and get results in low light and hard lighting conditions. These are just some of the specialities we will tackle in the master class. We have been granted special permission to access some low light interiors at UNESCO world heritage sites such as the Grand Masters Palace in Valetta, some of the amazing churches both in Gozo and on Malta, as well as other locations mentioned above.

These master classes will teach you not only how to take technically correct images but also what to look for to make at times intense moody images which will evoke emotion. As a group we will explore how to create a visual narrative through the lens so you can capture it in your image. You will learn how you can tell a story in one image or a series of images depending on your wants and needs. We will look for abstracts, architecture, cityscapes, seascapes and landscapes. As we travel around from location to location we will also look for and shoot street images. It will be through intensive and enjoyable shooting and observing everyday that we will be able to not only learn but also retain the information needed to create strong photographs on the tour and long after you’ve arrived back home.

I look forward to taking you on this exciting photographic journey!

Master Workshop Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Malta and transfer to the Ferry crossing in Cirkewwa, which will take you over to Gozo. This will only take 20 minutes and ferries provide a regular and frequent service all through the day.

Day 2

Ferry to Gozo, check in Xaghra, and visit Victoria, the capital city of Gozo, also known as Rabat. We shall also visit the fortified city know as the Citadel within Victoria.

As we head to the Island of Gozo we can start to take some shots on the way over. We will be picked up by mini bus and dropped at our accommodation. After this we will go into Victoria and then up to the Citadel. After a short walk around the Citadel we will commence a 3 hour lecture, starting with the basics of photography. This will make sure we are all starting from the same place with the right language of photography. We will also start basic post-production using computers.

Day 3

Open air bus - stopping at various places on our way to Xlendi Bay.

On the open air bus we will have a general look around Gozo as the bus takes us through the country side.  We will get off the bus at Xlendi Bay and go through general and some more advanced shooting techniques as we explore the surrounds of Xlendi. On arriving back to our accommodation we will continue work on post-production techniques.

Day 4

Gharb, Church of the Visitation, San Dimitri Chapel, Ghammar, Ta' Pinu, Jordan Lighthouse.

Drive to Gharb, learn how to shoot interiors at Gharb parish Church, we will then take a 20 minute walk to San Dimitri Chapel & cliffs, and a 1 hour walk around to Ta’ Pinu Basilica and various landscapes including Jordan Lighthouse. There will also be an optional walk to the top of Ghammar Hill. Drive back to accommodation, dinner.

It is here that we will start to go through very advanced shooting techniques for interiors. We will start at the deep end in the stunning Gharb parish church. There will be no flash used and your tripods must have clean rubber feet on them. Advanced post-production will follow in the evening.

Day 5

Punic Temples, Crafts village, Dwejra Drive to Kercem, visit Punic Temples & Dwejra landscape & seascape, drive to Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village in St Lawrence.  Walk down to Dwejra to visit the Inland Sea, Azure Window & Fungus Rock.  Drive back to accommodation.

As we walk around the Punic temples and Dwejra you will get first hand experience in shooting at sensitive sites. These locations are very raw with huge 180 degree views. We will learn how to shoot big landscapes and seascapes. We will also have to deal with very important issues of etiquette and sensitivity to the subject. There will also be strict safety rules at Punic temples and Dwejra. Weather permitting we may be able to go on a boat ride through the inland sea out through the caves and out to the open ocean to view the Dwejra landscape and seascape from a different perspective. When we are at the crafts village we will also discuss how to deal with the copyright issues of other artists work. The Village at St Lawrence is a great place for some free time, as well as a look around at what the crafts village has to offer.

Day 6

Xaghra Church, Ggantija Temples, Cemetery view, walk around Xaghra, visit Xaghra Basilica, Ggantija Megalithic Temples, Calypso Cave, Kortoll Belvedere (overlooking valley, Victoria, Citadel) This day will be a little more relaxed. We will not be going too far; instead we will concentrate our cameras around 5000 BC years of history at Ggantija Temples Calypso. We will also walk to see the beautiful scenic views from Kortoll Belvedere across the valley to the Citadel. We will take the opportunity to do a lot of post-production on this day.

Day 7

Walk down to M'Forn through valley, coastline, salt pans at Xwejni. 45 mins walk to Marsalforn Bay through Xaghra Valley, walk along coastline to Xwejni Bay Salt Pans

This is a fairly long walk down a meandering hill through a very fertile valley down to the coast. We will follow the coastline to the salt pans at Xwejni bay. It will be a reasonably long day but not overly taxing. This day will also give us a great chance to get into more post-production.

Day 8

Ferry to Malta; transfer to hotel for check in - 1/2 day history tour of the Baroque city of Valletta and Bastions, walk with guide whilst shooting general street scenes.

Day 9

Valletta (a UNESCO city). Some of the special places we will visit and photograph in Valletta will be The Grand Master’s Palace, St Paul's Shipwreck Church as well as other Museums and sites. This day will be a very special shooting day. It will be a hard schedule but these interiors are amongst the very best in the world. We will start at the Palace of the President of Malta (which is also the Parliament of Malta and also known as the Grand Masters Palace). We will be allowed to photograph two of the painted hallways. Next is one of my favourite churches in the world, the church of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck.  This is a fairly dark interior for us to tackle but this place oozes a very special ambiance. What will bring these places to life within the images taken will be the post-production. We will be using our advanced post-production to make these images as impressive as the subjects.

This will be a high pressure day. We will view some of the most amazing interiors, the interiors will be done with very strict time limits and we will need to be extremely careful of every move we make. For these interiors we will only take a camera and one lens, a wide angle for interiors. There will be no flash used and your tripods must have clean rubber feet on them. Being that we will be close to our hotel we will have a good chance to start some of the hardest post-production yet.

Day 10

North of Malta Tourist Bus - stopping off at various locations.

For a photographer this service is amazing. Like the Gozo tourist bus this stops at most of the best locations to get a good layout of the northern side of Malta. The schedule on this day will be very fluid; we will stop off at various locations on the route to get some images. These busses will give us a great look at the Maltese countryside. The intention is to stay very open to hopping on and off busses at different locations.

Day 11

Mdina (a UNESCO city), also known as the Silent City.

Walking the Medieval streets in Mdina is a very special experience; we will enter a variety of palaces and churches, each very different and steeped in history. We will need to use advance shooting techniques and post-production techniques to bring out the full potential in these images.

Mdina is a remarkable walled city. The shooting here will be very different due to the challenging lighting conditions. Because of the high walls we will find it hard to get good clean shots without harsh contrast. We will also be able to go into the Mdina Cathedral to shoot.

Day 12

South of Malta Tourist Bus - stopping off at various locations.

Like the Gozo and northern hop on hop off tourist bus we will see what the southern side of Malta has to offer. We again will have a very fluid-shooting schedule.

Day 13

The 3 Cities - exploring Cospicua, Vittoriosa, Senglea; Night shooting at Spinola Bay

The 3 cities of Cospicua, Vittoriosa, Senglea will be an incredible place for us to explore street scenes with our cameras. The 3 cities are full of very narrow, winding alleys and hidden spaces. Some of these areas are also steeped in history as these where the first fortified cities in the Grand Harbour and it is also where the Great Siege of Malta took place in 1565 against the Turkish Invaders.

Day 14

1/2 day Harbour cruise; Medieval Chapels

This day will be our chance to wind down and relax a little. The Grand Harbour cruise will allow us to spend a few hours taking in and shooting all the walled cities along the harbour.

A local experience

To fully immerse yourself in the Maltese culture and have an authentic experience, you will spend a lot of time each day walking as well as utilising the local ferries and tourist busses, we will be also utilising the services of local bus company when needed. At times the group will be joined by Maltese guides to share their knowledge of the sites and history.
